Logo Design Must-Dos and Don’ts: Creating a Logo That Works Everywhere 🎨

Your logo is often the first thing people see when they encounter your business. It appears on your website, business cards, social media, signage, uniforms, vehicles, packaging, and printed marketing materials.

That means a good logo needs to do more than simply look attractive.

It needs to work.

At SCV Printing–Thomas Graphics, we see logos in all shapes, sizes, colors, and file formats. Some are beautifully prepared for printing. Others… let’s just say they give us a little more to work with. 😉

If you’re designing a new logo—or thinking about refreshing an existing one—here are some important must-dos and don’ts to keep in mind.

✅ DO: Keep It Simple

A strong logo doesn’t need to tell your entire business story in one graphic.

Simple designs are often easier to recognize, easier to remember, and much easier to reproduce across different types of materials.

Think about where your logo might appear:

  • Business cards

  • Flyers

  • Signs

  • Banners

  • T-shirts

  • Embroidery

  • Vehicle graphics

  • Promotional products

  • Social media

  • Large-format printing

Your logo should still look good whether it’s two inches wide or several feet across.

❌ DON’T: Add Too Many Details

Tiny details can look great on a computer screen but disappear when your logo is printed small.

Intricate illustrations, extremely thin lines, tiny text, and complicated patterns can become difficult to reproduce clearly.

If someone has to squint to figure out what’s in your logo, it’s probably time to simplify.

✅ DO: Choose Fonts Carefully

Typography is a major part of your brand.

Your font should match the personality of your business while remaining easy to read.

Professional? Playful? Modern? Traditional? Bold?

Choose something that communicates your brand without making customers work to figure out what it says.

❌ DON’T: Use Every Font You Like

We understand.

There are A LOT of fonts.

But your logo probably doesn’t need seven of them. 😂

Using too many typefaces can make a logo feel cluttered and inconsistent.

A good rule of thumb is to keep your typography intentional and limited.

✅ DO: Make Sure It Works in Black and White

Here’s a great test:

Does your logo still look good without color?

Your logo may usually appear in full color, but there will be situations where a single-color version is necessary.

Think invoices, stamps, certain promotional products, embroidery, photocopies, and other applications.

A strong logo should have flexibility.

❌ DON’T: Depend Entirely on Color

If your logo only works because of a very specific color combination, you may run into problems when it needs to be printed differently.

Color is important—but your logo’s shape, typography, and overall design should do some of the heavy lifting too.

✅ DO: Get a High-Quality File

This is one of the biggest things businesses can do to make their printer—and themselves—very happy.

Whenever possible, keep a vector version of your logo, such as an AI, EPS, or SVG file.

Vector artwork can be resized without becoming pixelated, making it ideal for everything from business cards to large signs.

Also keep a high-resolution raster version, such as a properly sized PNG, for applications that require it.

❌ DON’T: Pull Your Logo From Facebook

We’ve seen it.

Someone right-clicks their logo from their website or social media page and sends that tiny image to the printer.

Then they ask:

“Can you make it really big?”

We can enlarge many images, but enlarging a small, low-resolution file doesn’t magically create the missing detail.

If you know you’re going to need signage, vehicle graphics, banners, or other large-format materials, start with quality artwork.

✅ DO: Think About Where Your Logo Will Live

Before finalizing your design, think beyond your business card.

Will it go on:

🚐 A company vehicle?
👕 Staff shirts?
🪧 Outdoor signage?
📦 Packaging?
🖨️ Printed marketing materials?
🎁 Promotional products?
📱 Social media?

A logo designed with multiple applications in mind will give you much more flexibility down the road.

❌ DON’T: Design Only for Your Screen

Your computer monitor isn’t the final destination.

Printed colors, materials, finishes, sizes, and production methods can all affect how your logo looks.

A design that looks fantastic on a glowing screen may need adjustments before it goes onto a banner, sign, shirt, or other printed product.

✅ DO: Leave Yourself Some Breathing Room

Your logo doesn’t have to fill every available inch.

Give it some space.

A little breathing room around a logo helps it stand out and keeps other design elements from competing with it.

This is especially important when you’re creating business cards, signage, promotional materials, and advertisements.

❌ DON’T: Make Your Logo Do Everything

Your logo isn’t your entire marketing strategy.

It’s one piece of your brand identity.

You don’t need to squeeze your phone number, website, slogan, address, services, social media handles, and your entire company history into the logo itself.

Let the logo be the logo.

Your other marketing materials can do the explaining.

🎨 The Golden Rule of Logo Design

Before you fall in love with a design, ask yourself:

Will I still love this logo five years from now?

Trends come and go. Your business hopefully doesn’t.

A logo that is clean, recognizable, versatile, and appropriate for your brand has a much better chance of standing the test of time.
